Students had zero design and boat building and design skills prior to FYB. In the program they designed and built paper boat models, wooden boat models, crafted other designs such as jewelry boxes in wood, designed and built skim boards. Students learned how to use computers to design boats parts and cut parts out on the laser cutter. Students also learned how to use hand tools: saws, drills, planes, hammers, and sand paper. They learned vocabulary: names of different kinds of boats; boat parts; navigational points. In short, campers built a 10’ boat from start to finish and are prepared for their next journey in boat design and building.
Survey data revealed slight increases in students care in nature and the importance of stewardship.
