Rocking the Boat empowers young people from the South Bronx to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves.
Rocking the Boat’s Sailing Program, which got off to an excellent start in 2015, continued to expand in 2016. The Sailing program involved summer sailing camps for middle school students, community sailing events to share sailing with the residents and a high school after school program. The Student Sailing Program taught high school freshman and sophomores through hands on experience sailing theory, navigation techniques, and the ecology of the Bronx and East Rivers, which surround their South Bronx neighborhoods, through a robust environmental curriculum focusing on the local ecology and the importance of protecting natural resources within this densely urban environment. The sailing program was facilitated by alums of the program, giving participants the ability to advance as their skills grow. Central to the success of the sailing program is the fully integrated youth development and support provided by a staff of social workers. This ensures that kids receive the life skills needed for future success!
