Land Rover BAR are Meat Free Monday

Released by Land Rover BAR.

Meat Free Monday is a simple method for reducing our impact on the planet.

By having at least one meat-free day a week you can help slow climate change, preserve natural resources and improve your health.

We humans eat a lot of meat! In fact, 56 billion animals are slaughtered annually for food worldwide.
In the UK we eat on average 50% more meat than is recommended by the World Health Organisation. Eating a lot of red and processed meat can increase the risk of some cancers and heart disease and may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The global population is now well over 7 billion and an estimated 800 million people suffer from malnutrition and hunger. Rearing livestock and growing feed use more energy and land than any other food production. “One hectare of land can feed as many as thirty people on a diet of cereals, fruits, vegetables and vegetable fats whereas the same area of land used for meat and/or dairy production would only feed between five and ten people.”(Pachauri, R.K 2008)

Our rapidly growing population has an equally growing appetite for cheap meat which is unhealthy for us and the earth. This trend is utterly unsustainable.

A third of our personal carbon footprint comes from the food we eat – how it is produced, where it’s transported from, how it’s processed, and half of that is from eating meat.

If the average household in the UK halved its consumption of meat, it would reduce emissions more than if car use was halved.

Intensive rearing of animals is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global”. United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

59% of the earth’s ice-free land is used for livestock grazing and feed production and is now the biggest cause of deforestation.

Agricultural intensification and expansion, and overfishing, are major factors in loss of species and biodiversity.

Industrial fishing has inexorably changed our oceans. We have an unprecedented depletion of fish and other aquatic life and fragile ecosystems are being destroyed.

By reducing the amount of meat and fish we consume we will use less fuel, water and land, and produce less pollution and greenhouse gasses.

We all have social and ethical responsibility to ensure the sustainability of the planet and Meat Free Monday is a great place to start.
