Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover Educational Program

Sustainability is a key theme throughout the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover, taking place May 5-17, 2015. The stopover will feature The Exploration Zone, an experiential learning center to be located at the Sailing Village. The Exploration Zone will include interactive displays and exhibits showcasing marine-based programming, ocean conservation, sailing, sustainability, entertainment, and hands-on activities for all ages. From education to onsite activation, Sail Newport strives to be a model of sustainability.

MAKING THE MOST OF NARRAGANSETT BAY: ABOVE AND BEYOND

Sail Newport is home to New England’s largest public sailing center and is considered Rhode Island’s premier public sailing site. They partnered with Save the Bay to engage kids in sailing while exploring Narragansett Bay and learning about the local ecosystem.

VEGETABLE OIL BOAT HOIST

11th Hour Racing collaborated with Sail Newport to replace their aging 3-ton boat hoist. After expressed concern over the hoist’s environmental impact on the harbor, a solution of a vegetable oil and hydraulic boat hoist was employed, mitigating the threat of an oil spill to the harbor and offering a viable alternative to launching boats for regattas and recreation. As a result, Sail Newport has already seen an 11.5% reduction in energy costs.
