Foiling SuMoth Challenge

The Foiling SuMoth Challenge was created by the SuMoth Association and Foiling Week— the first and only global event dedicated to the amazingly fast foiling boats, their sailors, designers, and builders — to support and promote sustainable boat building practices. This unique design competition challenges students to construct competitive Moth class compliant foilers while also considering the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the manufacturing process.

As the Title Sponsor of the Foiling SuMoth Challenge, 11th Hour Racing’s funding supports the sustainability principles and objectives of the SuMoth Challenge.

Initiatives Supported by 11th Hour Racing

  • Provide the opportunity to introduce sustainable, innovative, and creative designs and building methods to the sport, moving beyond traditional practices Provide participating teams with access and education to work with a Life Cycle Assessment Tool to help them understand the environmental impact of their designs.
  • Implement a zero-waste management plan to recover at least 70% of event waste through measurement, recycling, composting, and donation/reuse.
  • Prohibit the Event participants from using single-use plastic water bottles.
  • Diversify attendance of Foiling Week by incentivizing female participation.
  • Increased operational support for the SuMoth Association, opening up the capacity of the Challenge to more teams
  • Introduction of the SuSkiff, a voluntary option for teams to produce a second boat. Using a skiff design opens up the challenge to more teams, as it is a more mainstream boat design and less niche than the Moth.
  • The SuMoth Association will engage with U.S. engineering schools that align with the project’s goals to expand the challenge into the United States. This initiative aims to equip aspiring professionals with practical experience and industry-relevant skills, fostering a stronger entry into the marine and engineering sectors.

About the sponsorship

The Foiling SuMoth Challenge (FSMC) is a pioneering, student-driven competition centered on sustainably oriented high-performance applied R&D, innovation, foiling, and education.  Teams are challenged to design, manufacture, and sail their own sustainable foiling Moth, giving the competition its distinctive name, SuMoth. The International Moth Class (IMCA) is a high-performance, hydro-foiling dinghy known for its advanced engineering, making it perfect for innovation and experimentation.

This 3-stage competition emphasizes the use of sustainably oriented materials and processes, particularly in fiber-reinforced composites, while addressing the complexities of modern naval architecture. Teams strive to achieve high performance using alternative materials and innovative manufacturing techniques that align with sustainability objectives.

The 2025 SuMoth Challenge represents the 7th edition of the challenge, and 11th Hour Racing as the title sponsor of 6 editions. 11th Hour Racing’s sponsorship funds go directly to the operations to run the challenge, staff, and team development.
