Dr Susie Tomson, Sustainability Director of the team, has a very big and complex job at hand, overseeing not only the daily operations in the home base in UK, but also making sure the team is sustainable when moving from one venue to the next. Besides, of course, managing the big ticket items such as the overall strategy, which includes innovation, technology, stewardship, integrity and leadership.

Having 11th Hour Racing as Exclusive Sustainability Partners is instrumental and fundamental for the success of this project. Jill Savery, Sustainability Advisor for 11th Hour Racing, collaborates very closely with Dr Susie Tomson.

Fittingly, the America’s Cup Event Authority announced that it would implement “green guidelines” for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Bermuda – a big win for all!

Guidelines for exhibitors and vendors included the following:

  • Single-use plastic beverage bottles and cups are prohibited; instead you must use refillable and/or reusable cups and bottles.
  • Use environmentally friendly packaging ie biodegradable cups, bamboo cutlery, reusable cloth bags, etc.
  • No plastic straws, lids or beverage stir sticks, plastic cutlery, Styrofoam, plastic takeout containers or plastic bags.
  • No balloons.

Spectators who planned to attend the Event Village were asked not to litter and to dispose of waste at sign posted waste stations comprised of a 3 bin system: regular waste, recycling or compostables, bring reusable water bottles, interact with green volunteer teams to learn how to be greener and carpool, walk or use public transport to attend the event. In addition, there were hydration stations located throughout the Event Village for attendees to refill their bottles.

Along with the Green Guidelines, the America’s Cup also promoted on the water sustainability.

Boaters were encouraged to do the following:

  • Pick up any plastic they see floating in the ocean and dispose of it on land.
  • Be environmentally conscious about how much you use your engine
  • When fueling up, be conscious of any residual fuel spilling in the water
  • Recycle cans and bottles and don’t throw them in the water.
  • Be careful where you anchor.
